These numbers come from two separate GlassDollar research efforts, each with its own full report and downloadable PDF. This section summarizes what they found; the linked reports hold the complete methodology, sample sizes, and breakdowns.
This research analyzes more than 250,000 documented corporate-startup partnerships, one of the largest datasets of its kind, covering December 2022 to September 2025, to assess the relationship between systematic startup collaboration and financial market performance.
The headline finding
The top 50 corporate startup collaborators globally grew market capitalization by 109% over the period studied, against 69% for the MSCI World index — a 40-percentage-point gap. Because the largest US tech platforms dominate both collaboration volume and market performance, the obvious objection is that they're distorting the result: excluding Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Google reduces the figure to 86%, still 17 points above the benchmark.
Thus, the outperformance isn't a Silicon Valley effect.
Who's at the top, by documented partnership count
Amazon (5,583), Microsoft (4,907), Google (4,831), Volkswagen Group (2,420), Samsung (2,266), Meta (2,109), Coca-Cola (1,960), IBM (1,829), Siemens (1,795), and Deloitte (1,593). These ten account for roughly 30,000 partnerships, about 12% of the full dataset, and the list isn't purely a tech-sector phenomenon: Volkswagen at fourth place, Siemens at ninth, and Coca-Cola at seventh show that industrial manufacturers and consumer goods companies can build startup collaboration capability that rivals pure technology companies.
Geography
The top 50 collaborators split North America 56%, Europe 38%, and Asia 6%. The United States leads with 27 of the top 50; Germany is a distant but disproportionate second, reflecting the concentrated, formal adoption of Venture Clienting methodology by German industrial and automotive companies (Siemens, Volkswagen, BASF, SAP, BSH, Deutsche Telekom, Bosch, Daimler, Infineon, and Merck all appear in the global top 50).
Sector performance
Splits into three tiers: leading (Technology/Media/Telecom, Automotive and Transport — led by Volkswagen's 2,420 partnerships — Manufacturing and Industrial, Travel and Hospitality, Real Estate and Construction), on par (Financial Services, Energy and Utilities, Retail and Consumer Goods, Professional Services, active but not differentiating), and lagging (Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals, the most notable underperformer relative to its stated innovation ambition and R&D spend, held back by regulatory and procurement complexity, which also means an unusually large first-mover advantage for programs that clear those barriers).
What the data does and doesn't claim
The correlation between systematic startup collaboration and market outperformance is strong and holds up under scrutiny, but it's directional, not mechanically causal. Companies that build the organizational capability to identify, engage, test, and implement startup solutions at scale tend to be more effective organizations generally; the capability itself overlaps with broader operational discipline. What the data does support unambiguously: the best-performing companies in every major sector are investing more in systematic startup engagement, not less, and the direction of that relationship isn't in dispute.

GlassDollar's Impact of VCL Study Vol I, released in January 2024, is the first quantitative study of venture clienting programs, surveying 43 Venture Clienting Units across multiple geographies, industries, and company sizes, with academic support from the Max Planck Institute, TU Munich, University of St. Gallen, EBS University, and ESCP Business School.
Maturity distribution: of the 43 units studied, 49% sit at Starter level, 24% at Growing, and 27% at Pro — meaning most active programs today are still in their first year or two, the relevant peer group for most new programs rather than the headline Pro-level case studies. Cost per PoC declines with maturity, reflecting better negotiated terms, fixed costs spread across more projects, and more efficient sourcing and evaluation as programs mature.
Implementation rate is stable across maturity levels at 50–60%, suggesting business impact justifies implementation regardless of program size. Average business impact per implemented solution is roughly €2M, measured through cost reduction, revenue uplift, operational efficiency, or risk mitigation. Combined, expected annual program value scales from roughly €3M at Starter (three PoCs, one to two implementations) to €10M at Growing (ten PoCs, five to six implementations) to €30M+ at Pro (thirty-plus PoCs, fifteen to eighteen implementations).

Venture Clienting creates two-sided value, which is what distinguishes it structurally from CVC: the corporation gets validated solutions, faster problem-solving, and market intelligence, while the startup gets revenue, customer validation, product feedback, and market credibility. This two-sided dynamic is part of why multi-year relationships and repeat partnerships between the same corporate and startup are common.
Distribution, not centralization
The most significant structural finding in the broader 250,000+ partnership dataset is that most startup engagement happens at the business unit level, not through centralized innovation teams — meaning most large organizations are already engaging with startups more than they realize, just without central visibility or coordination. What separates top collaborators (the top 10 account for 30,000 partnerships, the top 50 for 60,000 — 12% and 24% of the dataset respectively) from average companies isn't intent or market cap, but institutional infrastructure: centralized or federated procurement that includes startup sources, funding mechanisms that let business units run PoCs without individual budget approval, legal templates built for early-stage companies, regular sourcing operations, and cross-business-unit knowledge sharing.
Startup supply is not the constraint
Roughly 1.3 million new startups are founded globally each year, and the database contains solutions addressing nearly every functional pain point across every industry. The bottleneck is corporate capacity to find, evaluate, and integrate solutions, not a shortage of startups to engage with.

"Venture Clienting" as a term is predominantly European. US companies run the same underlying practice under different labels (strategic sourcing, startup procurement, innovation partnerships, customer pilots), though English-language research and the term itself are gaining ground in the US as the practice spreads.
The US approach tends to embed startup engagement within procurement and strategic partnerships rather than a dedicated innovation function, benefiting from proximity to Silicon Valley, New York, and Boston ecosystems, and many US corporations run venture capital arms alongside or instead of formal VCL programs. The European approach treats venture clienting as a distinct methodology with defined roles, processes, and success metrics — the term "Venture Clienting Unit" and the Starter/Growing/Pro maturity framework are both European in origin, and European programs tend toward more formalized structure and governance. The UK sits in the middle, combining US-style ecosystem access (London) with exposure to European methodology; five UK companies rank in the global top 50.
Germany ranks second globally despite an economy smaller than California's because the practice originated at BMW Munich around 2014 and spread through German industrial companies from there. It also fits the structure of German industry unusually well: large conglomerates decentralized into multiple semi-autonomous business units, each with its own innovation budget, which is exactly the organizational shape Venture Clienting methodology is built to systematize.
As English-language research spreads and global sourcing platforms operate across markets, the practice is standardizing: "Venture Clienting" is likely to become the common global term within five to ten years, though the difference in regional emphasis — methodology-first in Europe versus procurement-first in the US — will likely persist even as terminology converges.
